The Tanfield group, owner of Smith Electric Vehicles, almost doubled its annual turnover in 2006 to £40.9m up from £22.4m in 2005.
Chairman Roy Stanley said: “The consolidation onto one assembly site has improved efficiency and control, and has given us significant expansion potential to further continue this growth. We also see opportunities to increase capacity in the USA, both for powered access and electric vehicles.”
Some big names are trialling the technology including TNT Express, Ceva Logistics, Starbucks, Marks & Spencer, and Sainsbury’s online service. Recently, DHL Logistics placed its first order for a vehicle.
