By January 2008, almost all vans and light trucks using an electronic accelerator will be required to carry a speed limiter. Autokontrol, a manufacturer of speed controls for trucks is launching a tamper-proof limiter in response to recent changes in legislation.
The new Autokontrol DBW system is designed for vehicles without a mechanical throttle linkage and are instead fitted with an electronic accelerator. The system uses a specially developed intelligent accelerator pedal and is connected to an existing electronic speed signaller fitted to the vehicle, such as the electronic speedometer or ABS system.
From these systems the DBW’s electronic control unit receives signals while the vehicle is in motion and transmits a signal to the engine’s management system to hold the vehicle at the legal maximum speed.
