Perhaps the most ambitious port development is the £1.5 billion London Gateway project at the old Shell Haven site on the Thames at Thurrock.
In November, Dubai World chairman Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem was in London to confirm the investment plans. He said: “After visiting the London Gateway site, we have realised the vital significance of this project for the British economy as well as for DP World.” The plan is to build a port capable of handling the largest deep-sea container ships, as well as the UK’s largest business park.
The 1,500-acre site will include the construction of the UK’s largest multimodal business and logistics park, with DP World working in collaboration with Shell. The plan includes a 2,300-metre long container quay.
