Sainsbury has chosen Wincanton to manage a 620,000 sq ft distribution centre being developed by ProLogis Park at Pineham, Northampton which is promised to be “carbon positive”.
It will serve more than 50 Sainsbury’s stores and handle some 1.5 million cases each week.
The site is due to be completed in the summer and will reduce its carbon emissions using photovoltaic panels, solar walls, rain water collection and on-site recycling. It will also use a carbon credits scheme that allows Sainsbury to trade its carbon emissions.
Supply chain director Roger Burnley said: “We have every confidence that Wincanton will manage the operation at our new eco-friendly DC efficiently and with the same level of dedication as it has on other Sainsbury’s contracts.”
