Siemens Automation & Drives has launched a materials handling division to provide support for the logistics, aggregate, airport, reclamation and recycling markets. The division, which will be led by business manager Andrew Peters, has been set up to help customers cope with the technological advances of the materials handling sector.
Siemens Automation and Drives has traditionally focused on factory automation, where is has become one of the market leaders. It has also been expanding its activities in switching and installation technology as well as in process automation.
Some of the developments the division will deal with include RFID and wireless technology, both of which are in demand in the materials handling sector. RFID could prove to be key in the optimisation of supply chains. Paul Hingley, product manager, communications, said if RFID systems are to be accepted across the entire logistics and supply chain industry, the cost to produce them must be reduced.
