The Institute of Grocery Distribution has launched a three step system designed to help the industry minimise the environmental impact of transporting food and groceries.
President Alastair Sykes set out the three key performance indicators at the IGD’s sustainable distribution conference in central London. Companies were urged to measure three factors: kilometres travelled by heavy goods vehicles in all the distribution legs of a product’s journey; litres of fuel consumed and tonnes moved on the total product journey.
Sykes encouraged the industry to increase efforts to improve sustainable distribution within organisations. The KPIs were developed in conjunction with ECR UK, an initiative which focuses on driving collaboration between retailers and manufacturers. Nigel Jones, distribution director of Tesco revealed that Tesco plans to develop its own source of bio fuel.
