The Certificate of Professional Competence for lorry drivers will be introduced in 2009. It means that existing heavy goods vehicle licence holders will have to complete a minimum of 35 hours of periodic training over five years, to update skills in areas of legal compliance, energy conservation, record keeping, road traffic care and driving skills.
The Freight Transport Association plans to provide a support programme to enable members to meet their statutory obligations and the necessary driver training.
