The President of Iceland is to open a new office building for Innovate Logistics in Leeds on 11 September.
Innovate says the building has been awarded the highest environmental score of any building in the UK by the Building Research Establishment.
The President, Olafur Ragnar Grimsson, will be viewing the building together with the Icelandic Minister of the Environment.
Stephen Dargavel, joint managing director of Innovate Holdings, will also use the event to launch the company’s new environmental policy which it says is “designed to provide the transport industry with a blueprint for environmental stewardship”.
Innovate became part of the Icelandic group, Eimskip, in February 2007. HF Eimskipafelag Islands is one of the largest companies in Iceland and is publicly listed on the Icelandic Stock Exchange.
Eimskip has 90 years of experience in providing transport, warehousing and logistics services in Europe, primarily in the North Atlantic region. It operates from 200 locations in more than 30 countries with a total of 10,000 employees. It has an annual turnover exceeding 1,450m euros and estimated 2007 EBITDA of 145m euros. It owns or operates 50 vessels, 100 cold-stores, 25 wide body cargo aircraft and 2,000 trucks and trailers.
The BRE’s Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) is used to assess the environmental performance of both new and existing buildings. It is regarded by the UK’s construction and property sectors as the measure of best practice in environmental design and management. The Innovate Office project rated 87.55 per cent – the highest ever given to a building of any kind in the UK.
