Unilever has awarded a £4 million supply chain contract to Atchison Topeka. The four year deal is with Unilever’s ice cream division, which produces brands such as Magnum, Cornetto, Solero, Calipo and Carte D’Or.
The 24-hour, six day a week operation involves Atchison Topeka collecting bulk liquid ingredients from manufacturers across the UK and Europe. Annually more than 2,000 just-in-time deliveries are made of inbound supply of all bulk ingredients to Unilever’s Gloucester production facility.
The deal includes on site management and discharge, along with holding liquid on temperature controlled tankers for periods of up to one week if required.
Previously, suppliers delivered product directly to the production site but this resulted in a rigid delivery profile that didn’t meet the changing needs of factory production, and pushed costs up.
Andy Franks, supply chain manager at Unilever Ice Cream, said: “We have demonstrated that working in close partnership has produced significant cost savings and innovation. We expect that further improvements and savings can be delivered during the next four years.”
