Label specialist Systems Labelling has successfully developed a home compostable label for the Sainsbury’s “SO” organic range of products.
From the initial brief to national roll-out took only eight weeks and involved a number of trials with Chingford Fruit, the retailer’s organic fruit supplier.
“A project management and combined approach was key to the success of this initiative” says Systems Labelling’s technical manager David Acott.
“We managed the process from the outset including; sourcing virgin material; conducting trials on our in-house coating facility; a cycle of performance trials with Chingford Fruit including application, quality and overprinting tests; full product trials to store; and finally roll-out to the suppliers for the full SO range nationwide,” he says. The compostable self-adhesive label material was developed to comply with the key industry standards including; EN13432, Dincerto and OK Compost Scheme.
Stuart Lendrum, print and packaging manager for Sainsbury’s, says: “We are extremely pleased with the results of this project.
“The time spent by Systems Labelling on research and development has paid dividends for all parties, most importantly our customers and the environment,” says Lendrum.
Chingford Fruit’s packaging buyer Darren Brett adds: “The project was handled professionally with the pre-agreed process adhered to throughout. I think we both benefited from pooling our technical expertise, indeed the result speaks for itself.”
