St Modwen Developments has signed an agreement with Darlington Borough Council to open up 70 acres of land within the Faverdale Employment Area to create a £50 million major industrial park capable of providing 1,500 jobs.
The site, which will be accessed through the existing Faverdale Employment Area and has direct links to junction 58, A1M, was formerly landlocked and comprised rough grazing land.
St Modwen secured an allocation of the site for employment development through the local planning system and then negotiated access arrangements with the local authority, which was the adjoining landowner.
In addition, St Modwen has submitted a planning application for up to 1.2 million sq ft of predominantly distribution space.
Steve Prosser of St Modwen said: “We have been working very closely with Darlington Borough Council to ensure this strategic site comes forward to provide much needed employment opportunities for the region and for the logistics industry.
“The site has the potential to provide up to 1.2 million sq ft of space and once planning has been obtained we will bring forward design and build opportunities. The aim is to secure up to 1,500 jobs over the next ten years.”
