FedEx has started trials of Iveco’s diesel-electric hybrid Daily.
The ten vehicles, which have been designed to offer fuel savings of up to 30 per cent in urban environments compared to a standard Daily, will be put through a field evaluation on routes between Milan and Turin.
Iveco expects the fleet to offer savings of around 6,000 litres of fuel annually, creating a 15 tonne reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.
The hybrid helps to lower fuel consumption by using stop/start technology, launching in electric mode and offering energy recovery from braking.
Paolo Monferino, chief executive of Iveco, said: “The next step is to make it affordable for our customers.”
