Aldi has lodged an planning application for the development of a regional distribution measuring more than 624,000 sq ft at a site in Sawley, just north of Castle Donington.
Located at Sawley Crossroads close to the M1 and A50, the development will include a 409,000 sq ft ambient warehouse and a 150,000 sq ft temperature controlled area, with 15 loading bays dedicated to the temperature-controlled area.
In the long-term, Aldi said in its planning application that it would expect 1,000 jobs to be created as a result of the distribution centre. Approximately 400 jobs would be created during the development phase, with a 600 expected.
The retailer last week submitted an application for a similar sized development on the Isle of Sheppey.
Aldi’s main hub is at Atherstone, a few miles down the road from Sawley. In September it also took a 120,000 sq ft distribution centre at Tamworth to provid additional space.
