Two-person home delivery company ArrowXL has launched its ‘Zero Waste Roadmap’ as part of its commitment to minimising CO2 emissions.
According to ArrowXL, this initiative ‘encompasses a strategic focus on recycling white goods, and the establishment of a National Recycling Centre at its Wigan depot’.
The delivery firm will work in partnership with recycling and waste specialists GAP Renew and GAP Waste to ‘implement specialised processes for the recycling of white goods, ensuring that materials such as refrigerators, washing machines and other appliances are responsibly repurposed’.
ArrowXL says that it currently collects 48,000 white goods for recycling each year, transporting them to its depot in Wigan for processing. Of these units, 6,000 are transferred from ArrowXL’s Airdrie site in Scotland.
Now, these items will be transported from Airdrie to GAP Renew’s recycling centre in Perth, also in Scotland. This move is set to reduce the number of miles driven by 40,000 per year, which equates to a reduction of 6.5 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
The new National Recycling Centre in Wigan will serve as a hub for processing and sorting recyclable materials. ArrowXL says that this aligns with with the Department for Environmental, Food and Rural Affairs’ (Defra) new ‘Simpler Recycling’ regulations, which came into effect on 31 March 2025. These reforms, aimed at reducing confusion and ending what Defra describes as the “postcode lottery” of bin collections.
Since the end of March, businesses in England must now arrange for the collection of the core recyclable waste streams, with the exception of garden waste.
To support its Zero Waste Roadmap initiative, all ArrowXL drivers will be trained to identify white goods for resale, in the hopes of reducing landfill waste. Drivers will also be trained to sort paper, cardboard, plastic and polystyrene prior to arriving at the Wigan depot, in order to ‘maximise the recycling opportunities of packaging waste materials and ensure operational efficiencies’.
Ian Pearson, procurement manager at ArrowXL, commented: “We are thrilled to introduce our Zero Waste Roadmap, which represents a significant step forward in our journey towards sustainability. We want the disposal of our waste to become a USP for us and our clients.
“By investing in innovative recycling initiatives and infrastructure, we are not only fulfilling our corporate responsibility but also setting a new standard for sustainability practices within the logistics industry.”
Peter Moody, GAP Group’s CEO, added: “ArrowXL’s commitment to sustainability aligns perfectly with our goals at GAP Group. This initiative not only reduces waste but also promotes the circular economy by reintegrating valuable resources into new manufacturing cycles.”
