Plans to increase rail freight capacity to and from Felixstowe have taken a step forward after Network Rail got the go-ahead to to build a new bridleway bridge across the Felixstowe branch line.
This will to provide a safe public route across the railway while enabling goods to be moved by rail freight and improving reliability for passenger services.
Network Rail has already begun engineering works to upgrade the branch line, building the space needed for 1.4km of extra track to be laid between Trimley and the level crossing at Gun Lane as part of a £60.4m investment.
The ongoing work on the branch line in this area will support up to ten additional trains in each direction to move goods to and from the Port of Felixstowe. Each additional freight train takes the equivalent of up to 76 lorries off the roads.
