Ahead of the 25th Supply Chain Excellence Awards, LogisticsManager.com caught up with Wincanton and EDF Energy, nominee in the Supply Chain Operations: Best Use of People and Process category at the Awards
Taking place on 8th November at the Hilton on Park Lane in London, the Supply Chain Excellence Awards are set to be a night of celebration, as the best in the logistics industry gather together on this very special 25th Anniversary.
How does it feel to have been shortlisted for a Supply Chain Excellence Award?
Being shortlisted for the Supply Chain Excellence Awards provides great recognition of our colleagues and partnership. What makes this even better is that we’ve demonstrated across Wincanton and EDF that our security culture is continually improving within the project.
What has changed in your project since you entered?
Since entering the award, Wincanton has also been recognised and shortlisted by Hinkley Point C in the Innovation category at its Hinkley Point C Excellence Awards for positively embedding a pioneering security culture.
What are you most excited for on the night of the Awards?
Sharing success with our Wincanton colleagues and winning our category will be extra special, as it will celebrate our collaborative approach with EDF.
What do you think is the most important thing to focus on now in the industry? What should be the biggest priority when it comes to change for the better?
Wincanton is committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 and our carbon saving activities will be woven into the Hinkley Point C project.

What are you looking forward to after the Awards?
If we are successful, we’re looking forward to sharing the news with the wider Wincanton and EDF teams. This will provide great recognition and showcase the efforts the team have made over the last 12 months to achieve a best in class culture whilst working during a pandemic.
What made you decide to compete for the Supply Chain Excellence Awards?
We are collectively proud to work on the Hinkley Point C project; the first new nuclear power station in the UK for a generation. We feel the Supply Chain Excellence Awards showcases some of the best success stories in our industry, so it’s a high accolade.
How will you celebrate if you win? Where will you keep the trophy?
We will celebrate with treats with EDF and the team. The trophy will be proudly displayed in the office at our Bridgwater warehouse.
What are your hopes for the project going forward? What are your next steps?
Security will always be a core priority at Hinkley Point C, and Wincanton will continually strive to work collaboratively with our customer and exceed their expectations. We are also looking forward to driving our net-zero carbon targets as part of future operations.
What difference did the project make for your company and for the sector?
Working closely with other sectors within Wincanton, Hinkley Point C’s SMEs and fellow Tier one contractors, we have been able to promote best practice across our and our customers businesses. We have also successfully implemented a security culture where our colleagues are open, honest and challenging and prioritise security as much as they do Health and Safety.
What are your impressions of the Supply Chain Excellence Awards generally?
The awards are thorough, well organised and unique, with the additional step of the presentation to the judges ahead of the Awards ceremony.

Can you sum up 2021 from a supply chain perspective?
Working on a critical national infrastructure project, our team continued to operate during the pandemic without hesitation, enabling Wincanton to play a key function in the supply of essential equipment to the project build contributing to our customer target of 20 milestones in 2020.
Do you have any advice for future Supply Chain Excellence Awards competitors?
As a supply chain services provider, the awards are unique, as you enter in collaboration with your customer, demonstrating the impact and improvements your project has had to improve processes or provide solutions. Working in collaboration with the customer is very important in order to be shortlisted and present to the judges.
