Sales at John Lewis for the week ending 29th December were up 4.5 per cent on last year with the strongest performance coming from fashion sales.
The retailer said it had seen very strong sales on Christmas Eve and a confident start to clearance sales, both online and in shops.
Sister company Waitrose reported sales for the week ending 29th December were up 19.2 per cent on last year, although sales in previous week were down 11.7 per cent.
It said the figures were distorted by the fall of Christmas and the new year, and a more meaningful picture would be revealed when it unveils its six-week trading figures on 10th January.
