A public consultation is now open for the Silvertown Tunnel, a new river crossing for east London that would link the Greenwich Peninsula with the Royal Docks. The proposals have been described as ‘vital for freight’ by the Freight Transport Association.
The tunnel is part of Transport for London’s plan for a series of new crossings that are needed to support the Capital’s growing population, which is expected to reach ten million by 2030.
Natalie Chapman, FTA head of policy for London, said: “A lack of cross-river connectivity in East London is stifling growth, causing gridlock and adding to the cost of doing business in East London. FTA welcomes the planned Silvertown Tunnel along with a network of other promised river crossings in this part of the capital which will deliver huge benefits not only for the freight industry, but for the businesses and communities we serve.”
The public consultation runs until 29 November 2015. Details at: www.tfl.gov.uk/silvertown-tunnel
