US automotive OEM Ford has opened a new parts distribution centre (PDC) in Dubai South, aimed at enhancing its parts distribution capabilities across the Middle East and Africa.
Developed in partnership with DB Schenker, the 41,792m2 facility is designed to support markets including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Angola and Ghana.
The facility incorporates advanced technologies to improve operational efficiency.
For example, drones are used for safety monitoring and inventory management, while an SAP S/4HANA warehouse management system enables paperless operations, barcode scanning and improved inventory accuracy.
The centre also features 20 container docks, divided evenly between inbound and outbound operations, capable of storing approximately 100,000 different parts, consolidating operations into a single hub to improve efficiency and reduce error margins.
Additional infrastructure includes a 1.3m raised floor to mitigate flooding risks and a fire suppression system designed to minimise operational interruptions.
Sustainability is a key focus, with plans to install a 400kW solar panel system in 2025, expected to cut energy costs by 35% and reduce carbon emissions by 290 tonnes annually.
Ford has also partnered with eco-friendly suppliers and scrappers to ensure compliance with recycling and disposal regulations.
“The enhanced service levels and reduced wait times will support customer satisfaction and strengthen relationships with distributors,” said Kay Hart, president of Ford International Markets Group.
Ako Djaf, vice president of contract logistics and supply chain management for DB Schenker in the Middle East and Africa, added: “The new parts distribution centre reflects a focus on improving supply chain processes and meeting sustainability objectives.”
Ford’s investment is part of a long-term strategy to expand its regional operations, nearly doubling its parts distribution footprint in the Middle East since 2011.
