The department of transport has said it will make changes to ensure side guards and rear under run devices stay permanently fitted to HGVs, in a bid to improve road safety and reduce deaths.
Plans to consult on legislative changes to ban the removal of side guards were revealed in the British Road Safety Statement, which was published on Monday.
The report also outlined existing plans for new laws at EU level to improve HGV design to get safer and more aerodynamic lorries on British roads. This includes consideration of both the driver’s field of view for new vehicle designs, permitting camera monitor systems as an alternative to mirrors, and improving the front structure of vehicles to provide better protection for pedestrians and cyclists.
