The transport and logistics department of Lancashire-based wholesaler James Hall & Co has taken delivery of a fully electric SPAR refrigerated trailer, the first vehicle with an electric motor to be added to the company’s fleet.
The addition of such a vehicle is expected to eliminate diesel costs and reduce CO2 emissions.
The trailer will be used to deliver products from SPAR’s Preston distribution centre to SPAR convenience stores across the north of England. The facility in Preston has the capabilities to charge the vehicle’s battery and ‘pre-chill the load space’. The trailer’s battery pack has a five-hour reserve run-time to maintain operation of the fridge while on the move.
Ian Farnworth, James Hall & Co’s Fleet Engineering Manager, claims that the trailer “is already delivering savings when out on the road.”
Farnworth relishes the new addition to the fleet for both cost-cutting and environmental reasons, with the company explaining that this is part of a wider initiative to ‘run a greener fleet’.
