Lidl has confirmed that it is developing a 580,000ft² regional distribution centre in Leeds, West Yorkshire as reported by Logistics Manager in March this year.
The retailer submitted plans to Leeds Council for the facility on the 34.6-acre site known as Plot E at 62 Leeds. It will incorporate a warehouse for chilled, frozen and ambient goods as well as offices, a pallet store, and drivers lounge. The warehouse will have 20m eaves as well as 108 dock loading doors and HGV spaces – 25 unsecured and 75 secured. There will be 309 car parking spaces (10% EV charging) as well as 140 cycle spaces.
The building will incorporate a number of sustainability features including PVs, LED lighting and PIR lighting controls, as well as waste heat recovery from roof-mounted condensers to heat offices, water reduction measures, CHP and BEM resulting in a an Excellent BREEAM rating.
Richard Taylor, chief development officer at Lidl GB said: “Our ambitious warehouse plans demonstrate our commitment to investing not only in our distribution network but the country as a whole. An RDC in Leeds would be a great addition to the North, while we continue to keep a lookout for new sites in the South.
“In the last five years we have opened over 2,583,338ft² of warehouse space and invested over £700m, but we need more space and people to help us meet our growth targets. We’ve built an impressive store portfolio across the country and our vision to have over 1,100 stores in Great Britain remains unchanged.”
Over the last five years Lidl GB’s focus on regional operational expansion has been unprecedented, opening four RDCs including Motherwell, Peterborough, Doncaster and a second site in Belvedere. These three sites have collectively created over 1,400 jobs for people up and down the country.
