Lidl UK has opened a new 39,000 sq m, £55 million regional distribution centre in Southampton – its biggest site in the UK.
The discount supermarket retailer is also planning on developing regional sites in Glasgow (Eurocentral), Bristol, Exeter, and Wednesbury, as part of a £1.5 billion expansion investment between 2015-2018.
This Southampton development will Lidl’s tenth regional distribution centre in the UK – it already has facilities in: Northfleet, Enfield, Belvedere, Livingston, Weston-Super-Mare, Lutterworth, Newton Aycliffe, Runcorn and Bridgend. Its Weston-Super-Mare and Livingstone sites will be relocating to Bristol and Eurocentral respectively.
The site is expected to generate up to 400 jobs, and will service stores in and around Hampshire, Dorset and West Sussex.
“The opening of our new Southampton RDC marks an incredibly exciting time for the business, particularly in the South,” said Marco Ivone, regional director, Lidl UK. “Not only is it necessary to accommodate the scale of our existing and future operations in the area, we have been able to create significant job opportunities as a result of the new warehouse and will continue to invest in the South as we move forward with our expansion plans.”
