The rise in avian influenza paired with increased costs for farmers due to the war in Ukraine have resulted in a shortage of eggs, according to the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs.
These supply chain issues have begun to impact UK supermarkets, with household names like ASDA, Lidl, and Tesco all reportedly introducing rations on the amount of egg cartons customers can purchase.
Recent reports also suggest similar policies coming into place at other supermarkets including Morrisons and Marks & Spencer.
A spokesperson for the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs said: “We understand the difficulties that rising input costs for feed and energy over the last year, combined with the bird flu outbreak, are causing for farmers and we are working with industry to monitor the market.”
