Peel Ports Group (PPG), in partnership with Stanlow Terminals, has announced that ship-to-ship (STS) fuel transferring will now be possible at Tranmere Terminal.
Whereas before, smaller ships from European ports were required to transport large volumes of cargo to and from larger vessels, this new service will allow larger ships to transport goods internationally, directly from Tranmere.
Phil Hall, Port Director of the Mersey Division at Peel Ports Group, said: “Providing STS transfers on the Mersey will bring about numerous benefits, not least attracting business into the local area as more transfers are carried out on a regular basis helping save emissions, costs and time.”
The system was trialled over the summer and after three successful fuel transfers, it is ready to be made available to customers.
Michael Gaynon, Chief Executive at Stanlow Terminals is “delighted” with the introduction of STS transfers, saying: “not only will it enable greater fuel loads to be imported and exported from Tranmere, but will also significantly expand options and opportunities for our customers”.
According to Peel Ports Group, the new service will have the capacity to transfer up to 160,000 tonnes of fuel per month.
