Malory Davies writes: I am sad to report that Ray Horsley has died, aged 87.
Ray was the driving force in the development of a professional institute for logistics, first within the British Institute of Management and then as a standalone organisation, the Institute of Logistics & Distribution Management (which is now part of the CILT). It seems only a short time since he recruited me to the ILDM, but it is more than 25 years.
By the time he retired as director general in 1993 the membership had topped 10,000. Everyone in logistics owes Ray a huge debt – not only in building the institute, but in raising the status of logistics as a professional discipline in both the private and public sectors.
