Logistics firm DB Schenker has launched remote-controlled forklifts at its contract logistics site in Kassel, Germany, marking a significant step in the company’s ongoing efforts to automate logistics processes.
The forklifts are operated by drivers remotely through a platform developed by German technology start-up enabl Technologies.
This setup allows drivers to control multiple vehicles across different locations, enhancing operational efficiency and flexibility.
The move is part of DB Schenker’s broader digitalisation strategy aimed at improving productivity and maintaining competitiveness in an increasingly automated logistics landscape. The company highlighted the partnership with enabl as a key development, particularly in responding to fluctuations in demand and addressing labour shortages.
To further cement their collaboration, DB Schenker and enabl recently signed a letter of intent, outlining plans to expand the use of remote-controlled forklifts across multiple international locations.
This move is expected to enhance the company’s automation efforts and position it at the forefront of warehouse technology innovation.
The use of remote-controlled forklifts represents a key milestone in DB Schenker’s broader strategy to modernise its logistics operations through cutting-edge automation and technology solutions.
Lucas Mömken, vice president of global engineering and innovation in contract logistics at DB Schenker, said: “The collaboration with enabl allows us to react flexibly to fluctuations in demand and automate our processes to increase productivity. We see this partnership as a valuable addition to our CL digitalisation strategy, which will help us to secure our competitiveness in the long term.”
Julian Wadephul, CEO of enabl Technologies, added: “Our solution has been in continuous use at DB Schenker for nine months and has shown that our product meets the needs of our customers and market trends. This collaboration is a big step for us on the way to becoming a global leader in warehouse automation. We are pleased that our safety concept makes it possible to dispense with a support driver with immediate effect.”
