Rhenus Logistics has officially opened its new warehousing development, known as the ‘Rhenus Campus’, in Nuneaton, Warwickshire.
The 64-acre site is home to two warehouses totalling nearly one million ft²; one measuring 771,000ft² and the other 221,000ft².
The campus has achieved BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ certification, with Rhenus Warehousing Solutions UK keen ‘to put sustainability at the forefront of its operations’.
Mike Gamble, managing director of Rhenus Warehousing Solutions UK, said: “This is a hugely significant milestone for us. A lot of work has gone into making the ‘Rhenus Campus’ reach such impressive sustainability goals and we are proud to have officially opened the development with our customers, partners and stakeholders. We are looking forward to providing our customers with innovative solutions from this environmentally-friendly, state-of-the-art facility.”
Renewable energy is a key part of the sustainability strategy on campus, with a system of 2,288 solar panels expected to generate an estimated 870,000 kWh each year – the equivalent power consumption of approximately 250 homes for a year.
Other sustainability features include three air source heat pumps, 80 electric car charging points and cross-laminated timber floors which, according to Rhenus, were responsible for 64% lower embodied carbon than a standard floor.
Ronny Sassen, CEO of Rhenus Warehousing Solutions, added: “The ‘Rhenus Campus’ is one of the best examples of sustainable warehousing and forms an important part of our global commitment to positively impacting the environment. Energy efficiency is being improved throughout and biodiversity initiatives are being implemented wherever possible.”
When it comes to biodiversity, the site features ‘extensive green spaces, homes for local wildlife and 700-900 native trees’.
Additionally, employees have access to on-site allotments, sports pitches, a walking/cycling trail and an outdoor gym. To further its contribution to the ‘social’ element of ESG, Rhenus is also running a community outreach programme, allowing organisations such as Nuneaton Borough Ladies and Girls FC, Attleborough Sports JFC, the Nuneaton branch of the British Gurkha Veterans Association and the Dare2Dream Foundation to use the company’s facilities.
