Nestled in the North West of England, Stockport is on the brink of a major transformation with a £1 billion regeneration plan taking shape.
The town recently celebrated the unveiling of the Stockport Interchange and the Viaduct Park, marking significant milestones in its journey to become a ‘thriving hub for residents and businesses alike’.
The resurgence of Stockport aims not only to revitalise the town centre but also to foster an environment conducive to living, working and leisure.
Councillor Colin MacAlister, the driving force behind Stockport’s renaissance, expressed his enthusiasm. He stated: “Stockport has one of the largest regeneration programmes nationally – so it’s a very exciting time for the borough with many developments being delivered that people are now beginning to see, such as Stockport Interchange and our fabulous new Viaduct Park.”
With the completion of the ‘state-of-the-art’ transport hub scheduled for May 2024, seamlessly linking Stockport Exchange, the train station and the town centre, the town anticipates a surge in connectivity and accessibility. The residential component of this endeavour promises urban living intertwined with expansive green spaces and unparalleled transport links.
The Stockport Exchange site was approved in 2014, with Phase 1, 2 and 3 of Stockport Exchange all now fully constructed. The site already includes tenants such as Stagecoach, MusicMagpie, Holiday Inn Express and Sainsbury’s. Plans for Phase 4 of this development will be submitted at the end of March 2024 by the council and nationwide place-maker Muse to feature additional office space of 60,000ft2 and 100 more residential apartments.
Moreover, the rejuvenation extends beyond the commercial realm. Stockport’s cultural landscape receives a significant boost with the imminent opening of Stockroom, a dynamic space fostering creativity, learning and community engagement. Simultaneously, historic landmarks like Weir Mill and the iconic White Lion building undergo transformative makeovers, poised to breathe new life into the town’s heritage sites.
Councillor MacAlister affirmed: “We really are bringing life back into the Town Centre. Stockport is not just the best place to live, it’s the best place to shop work and relax.”
