The van market grew 10.6 per cent in March driven by strong performances from the panel vans.
Figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders show registrations rising to 66,123 for the month, making it the best ever monthly performance, and accounting for almost two thirds of the total for the first three months.
The 2.5-3.5 tonne sector was the strongest performer in the first three months rising 10.4 per cent to 63,337 registrations. The 2-2.5 tonne sector was up 8.9 per cent to 15,368.
SMMT chief Mike Hawes pointed out that March is typically the busiest month of the year and it’s great to see large demand for the new ‘19 plate.
“While the market does fluctuate with buying cycles, it appears buyers are making the most of the fantastic deals on offer. For such exceptional demand to continue long term, however, we need business confidence to improve and that means an end to the political and economic instability besetting the UK.”
Ford has increased it share of the LCV market in the first three months to 34 per cent compared to 33.5 per cent last year. Second place was taken by Volkswagen with 11 per cent share, while Peugeot was third with 9.5 per cent.
