Lack of integration in the construction industry supply chain is leading to lost innovation opportunities – at least that’s the thesis of Innovate UK and it has £2 million to do something about it.
Innovate UK is the new name for the Technology Strategy Board, the government body for funding and supporting business innovation to accelerate sustainable economic growth.
The industry comprises more than 280,000 companies employing up to 3 million workers, and Innovate UK argues that the fragmented nature of the industry is at the root of the problem. “With so many layers of sub-contractors and suppliers, construction clients too often find themselves divorced from those who deliver projects on-site.”
In particular, it wants to explore new ways of increasing collaboration in the construction industry supply chain, and improving the flow of information throughout the chain.
Companies in construction or any other industry sector can apply for a share of the £2m funding. Feasibility studies must be business-led and projects are open to companies of any size working in collaboration.
Funding will cover 50 per cent of project costs for large organisations – and up to 70 per cent for small businesses. Projects are expected to last up to a year with total costs ranging from £50,000 to £150,000.
The competition opens on 9th March so there is still time to put develop ideas.
