The new high speed rail link, represents a huge logistics opportunity as well as a huge logistics challenge. And some of the industry’s leading thinkers will be scrutinising the issues at the Rail Logistics Conference which opens in Birmingham today.
Peter Sollitt, project director – route wide logistics and utilities at HS2, will explain exactly what it involved is constructing the link.
Sollitt is responsible for route wide construction logistics, route wide traffic management, and route wide security. He also leads the Utilities team to deliver utilities protection/diversion works and the temporary utility connections required to deliver Phase One of HS2.
He is just one of the industry leaders speaking at the conference which will look at impact of HS2 on freight transport and logistics as well as the opportunities involved in the building of the project.
The conference will be chaired by Peter Ward, chief executive of the UK Warehsouing Association.

Terry Morgan, chairman, of Crossrail, will look at logistics best practice in delivering Crossrail – one of the biggest civil engineering projects ever undertaken in the UK.
Since its inception the project has shown how effectively managed logistics and supply chains allow a massive undertaking like this to happen beneath one of the busiest city in the world with minimal disruption. In this opening keynote we will hear how this was achieved, the progress so far and the challenges still to come.
And David Legge, head of HS2 development at DB Schenker Rail will examine the impact of high speed rail on freight.
In particular, he will look at how the industry can work together to ensure maximum benefit for freight; how will freight operators work with HS2; how much extra capacity will be created; and what role will freight operators play in the construction phase of the project.
Birmingham City Council has publicly welcomed Hs2 and the benefits it will bring to the city and the area. A brand new station will be built in the centre of the city and extensions to the tram network are already planned.
This work will regenerate an area of the city and also bring massive opportunities for contractor and suppliers..
Effective Tendering and Contract Planning is a critical issue in major projects and TC Chew, owner, Chew Transit Consultancy, will examine the issues in his presentation. Hong Kong has one of the most efficient and comprehensive transport networks in the world.
This network would not run or be able to expand without effective logistic management and controls. TC Chew, who was in charge of development at MTR for over 4 years, will explain how they managed this and offer practical advice to any size company bidding for rail contracts on the Hs2 project.
Craig Rowbottom, principal development planning officer for Birmingham City Council will look at the benefits that HS2 will bring to the city.
