German online retailer Zalando is to start construction of its first Dutch fulfilment centre at a business park near Rotterdam which will serve customers in the UK, Benelux, France and Spain.
It will invest €200 million in the centre’s intralogistics. The fulfilment centre will have the highest level of automation within Zalando’s network, which currently consists of nine fulfilment centres spread across Europe.
Jan Bartels, SVP customer fulfilment said: “A strong logistics network is the foundation for realise our growth strategy and the vision of becoming the Starting Point for Fashion. By constructing a new state-of-the-art fulfilment centre in Bleiswijk, we are confident that this is an important step forward in building the infrastructure to achieve 20 billion euros in gross merchandise volume by 2023/2024.”
The site will have a floor area of 140,000 sq m and a total storage capacity of 16 million items. The first parcels are set to be delivered from Bleiswijk in the summer of 2021.
* Zalando and adidas are partnering in a project to efficiently steer logistics. In a pilot phas in Paris, Zalando delivers goods on the same or next day from its own logistics centre in Moissy-Cramayel to adidas customers in Paris for orders placed on the adidas web site in France.
